TransNatura 2026 Opens Its 13th Edition — and Your First Three Nature Photographs Enter Free

Some contests ask you to pay for the privilege of being judged. TransNatura does the opposite: it lets your first three photographs in the door for free, then trusts the work to carry itself. The VADON Association has announced the 13th TransNatura International Nature Photo Contest 2026, an IAAP-recognized salon based in Sfântu Gheorghe, Romania, and open to photographers everywhere. If you shoot the natural world — patiently, honestly, and in the field where it actually happens — this is one of the strongest-value calls of the season.

The prizes

Seven prizes worth a combined €5,500 are on the table. The TransNatura Grand Prize pays €1,500 for the single best photograph in the contest. Each of the two categories then awards €1,000 for first place, €600 for second, and €400 for third. That structure matters: instead of one winner taking everything, six category photographers go home with real money, and a finalist exhibition puts the selected work in front of a live audience rather than leaving it on a results page.

Winning and selected photographs will be exhibited at the Hunting and Natural Sciences Museum in Sfântu Gheorghe, with the exhibition opening on 22 January 2027. A digital catalogue of the show will be published on the contest’s Facebook page after the opening — the kind of printed-and-exhibited credit that strengthens a portfolio long after the prize money is spent.

Two categories, one rule: nature, undisturbed

TransNatura keeps its structure simple. The Wildlife category welcomes portraits, action shots, and everyday scenes that show animal behavior, beauty, and the animal’s role in nature — the decisive moment, the quiet gesture, the story a wild creature tells when it doesn’t know you’re there. The Nature and Landscapes category covers landscapes, forests, waters, plants, and natural phenomena, excluding animals: the architecture of the wild itself.

Underneath both categories sits the contest’s defining ethic. Images must be taken in natural habitats without disturbing wildlife, and photographs of captive animals are not eligible. This is a conservation organization’s contest — VADON is a nature conservation association based in Sfântu Gheorghe — and the rules carry that mission. The photograph is evidence of an encounter, not a production.

The honest-photography rules

TransNatura’s editing rules draw a clear, old-school line. Major alterations to key visual elements are not allowed. Global adjustments are permitted — levels, curves, color balance, brightness, and similar whole-image corrections that any darkroom printer would recognize. What you cannot do is rebuild the scene. Photographs must not contain text, watermarks, or signatures.

For photographers who have watched contests drift toward composite art, that restraint is the appeal. Your fieldcraft is the competitive advantage here: knowing where the herd crosses at dawn, waiting out the fog on the ridge, reading the wind before the cranes lift off the marsh. A five-member international jury will evaluate the entries, and juries at salons like this one can tell the difference between a photograph that was earned and one that was assembled.

What to submit, and what it costs

Entries are digital JPG files with a minimum long side of 3,000 pixels, in RGB color space, and they should be suitable for enlargement to at least 60 cm — this is a print exhibition, so send files that can hold a wall. The contest is open to amateur and professional photographers worldwide; only jury members and organizers are excluded.

The pricing is the friendliest part of the call. Your first three submitted photographs are free of charge. Each additional image costs €5. In practice, that means a focused three-image entry — your strongest wildlife frame and two landscapes, or the reverse — costs nothing at all, and a fuller portfolio stays cheaper than a single entry at most international salons.

How to enter

Entries are submitted through the VADON Association’s contest portal at vadon.ro, where you will also find the complete official rules, including the confirmed entry deadline for this edition — check it before you upload, and don’t leave a free entry sitting in a folder while the window is open. Everyone is informed of the results by email.

At Christifa & Associates, we read a lot of contest calls, and the pattern we trust is simple: a real organization, a real exhibition, published prize money, and rules that protect the craft. TransNatura checks every box, and it removes the usual excuse — the entry fee — for your first three photographs. If nature is your subject, open the archive, pick the frames where the wild world did the work, and send them to Romania.

Christifa & Associates covers photography contests and open calls as part of our ongoing Photography coverage. Details above are drawn from the organizer’s announcement; always confirm the final rules and deadline on the official entry page before submitting.
